Boxing great Miguel Cotto followed his successful knockout by beaning Larry Donald on Friday night with a backhand attack that left his opponent hurt, but running for his life from the five-foot-ten-inch, 100-pound fighter. Fortunately, however, Donald got away with only a bruised right eye, according to Bob Saget, the celebrity boxing trainer who witnessed the brawl.
On Saturday, though, a brawl — and two winners — brought to an end another edition of the annual Celebrity Boxing 2 promotion. This time, it was Mexican defender Oscar Valdez (13-0) who downed former NFL star and extreme sports enthusiast George Allen in the finale, leaving both of them battered in a truck stop in Arizona. Valdez, a diminutive 31-year-old with a resume as impressive as Cotto’s, walked away to an appreciative crowd of loud cheers, while Allen, the one-time captain of the Redskins, cried.
Saturday’s ugly fights were the latest additions to what promoter Damon Feldman has dubbed “Fox Sports Sunday II” — both can include NFL players, as it was this past January when Donald beat out Baltimore Ravens player Bobbie Williams. Despite his progress and love of danger, Stewart, who is on leave from the Navy, is still shooting for a spot on the XFL’s roster.
