I am talking to you for a lot of reasons, not least because I am amazed at your enviable skin.
I used to have rosacea in my teens and 20s, and thank god that did not continue through my adult life. I have not experienced an outbreak of that oil-shedding condition in over fifteen years. I credit the amazing physicians I’ve seen, the research I’ve read about and the success of combination creams that I use in conjunction with daily moisturizing for my clear skin. I tend to use at least 2 or 3 moisturizers throughout the day, which would most likely be irritating to you even with oil-absorbing ingredients.
But even so, you have a complicated skin situation.
I am a dermatologist, and my heart breaks for you. The daily assault of your entire life putting out hormonal, petroleum-like yolk has taken its toll. Whether you are an individual suffering from severe acne or struggle with associated skin conditions, your beauty routine needs to be changed. In general, dermatologists recommend opting for topical products to address unwanted adult acne over prescription antibiotics, which have been associated with gastrointestinal disorders.
Here are some simple suggestions for you to consider for your own skin-care regime:
-Avoid forms of exfoliation that irritate your skin. This means avoiding chemical peels and hot tools in skin care. It is also recommended that you avoid exfoliation in early stages of acne if you have impaired or a history of inflammation of the skin, such as eczema. If your skin is sensitive, try removing redness in other ways first, like using topical steroid creams, blueberry extract or hydrogen peroxide to block the sebum. These products are safe for most individuals with mild to moderate skin conditions.
-Avoid inflammatory ingredients. Think green tea, vitamin C, water-soluble sea kelp (for facial peels) and citrus-derived ingredients. These can be irritating to the skin and help seal in the sebum that enables your skin to trap those little eggs.
-Alternate face scrubbing. Your skin is like a muscle. To prevent irritation and inflammation, try alternating between body and face scrubs. Many people hate using brushes on their faces because it messes up the smooth texture of their skin. I’m not saying to use the same brush on both parts of your face, but even if you don’t, you can also try moistening your face with a damp cloth in the morning to cleanse and tone.
-Try luxury face products that contain oil-free oils. Banana, coconut, aloe vera and avocado add an extra sheen and texture to your face. Since these oils do not come from the petroleum, as does parabens and other silicone-based ingredients that are used on most synthetic products, they are gentler on your skin. Aloe Vera is actually made from aloe juice, so make sure to use it instead of your olive oil, sunflower oil or grape seed oil. I especially love the taste of coconut- and avocado-scented face creams and lotions.
-Keep your face products clean. Keeping your skin protected with clean facewash bottles and brushes is a must. Your skincare products were made specifically for you with you in mind. The bacteria and microorganisms on your face will get the message that your facial cleanser is actually scrubby garbage. Protect your face every day with a washcloth and a fresh spritz of dry shampoo (also, dry shampoo with aloe is great for blemish-prone skin), and have skin care products stored away in a cupboard that are not stored above a sink. You should also buy counter temperatures as a protection when hand washing products, like hand cream, hand cleanser, moisturizer, cleanser and conditioning oils.
-Safer options exist. For example, I have saved your highlighter for last. I stopped using it in early episodes of my career-endangering acne, and now I use an SPF 25 hand cream, hand cream and highlighter. For heavier applications of your favorite products, you can also buy wipes that are specifically formulated for products like highlighters.
