It was a weekend so much like the ones you heard about last summer that it’s hard to believe the country singer on stage hadn’t agreed to join in any chorus: “Fuck you, Joe Biden.”

Aldean took the stage at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday night with a new song he’d just cut called “She’s Country,” for which he replaced the patronizing “Guess who’s coming to dinner” lyric with the more politically charged “She’s country. She’s the boss. And she knows a little somethin’ about me.”

The new song followed his older song “What Do You Know” — which brought his political slant into full view. (“She’s the boss of Barack / Obama ain’t got nothing on me / He’s a bit of a chump / but that’s alright / What do you know?”) There’s nothing subtle about that pairing, even if Aldean had politely avoided mentioning Trump or Obama before Saturday night.

But the timing of it was too good to miss: Some of his closest fans were in town for the CMT Music Awards, where Aldean was nominated for awards in both Entertainer of the Year and Male Video of the Year, and for being one of the favorites to win those awards.

But before Aldean got started singing “What Do You Know,” for which he’s also nominated, the audience broke out into a chant of “F— Joe Biden.”

Aldean was later asked by TMZ about the rant, and responded by saying he’d been pressured to apologize by “political operatives.” Then, to the best of his knowledge, he added, “That would be the only thing.”
