Canadian police chiefs’ association urges government to increase women’s boardroom presence

The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police is urging the federal government to take measures to build an “intelligent, knowledgeable, diverse and inclusive leadership force” in Canada’s boardrooms. In a letter obtained by the Financial Post, CAACP recommends that the federal government set the bar “to achieve at least a 50-50 representation of men and women on the boards of each of the major corporations in Canada.”

Canada “has the ability to significantly improve the effectiveness of its executive and corporate governance mechanisms,” says CAACP, as it announced at a news conference that it is taking voluntary board diversity tests to more than a dozen law enforcement agencies across the country. A new board diversity initiative would see the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CAACP) conduct voluntary screen tests for the qualifications of board members for the Canadian police chiefs’ association.

Theirs is not the only advisory role for police chiefs to take on. The CAACP is the voice of over 4,000 police chiefs across Canada, including Bill Blair, the chief of Toronto Police Service.

Prior to the press conference, CAACP warned police chiefs around the country that the 2017 Business Council of Canada report highlighted the gender inequality and materialism that pervades boardrooms. “Canada’s population is one-third female,” read a description on the CAACP website, “yet our boardroom diversity is just 5 per cent female, so far failing to meet gender equity.”
